Notary Public & Notarisation


A document sealed and signed by a valid Notary Public is known as Notarised document and the act is known as Notarisation.

Notary Public notary or a notary public is a person, usually a lawyer, who has legal authority to witness the signing of documents in order to make them legally valid.
In Nepal, Notary Public is a qualified lawyer and authorized to “Translate, Certify and Verification of documents”.

S/He is also authorised to administer oath and take an affidavit from any person

In Nepal, only Notary Public is authorized to translate, certify and verify documents.
Purpose of Notarisation The purpose of notarisation is to certify genuineness and proper execution of documents in order to prevent fraud.
Document Legalisation
  • The term legalisation refers to a document being issued with the correct stamps or certificates in order to be recognised in another country.
  • This will refer to a document being issued with an apostille when the document is being used in a country party to the apostille convention.
  • Legalisation makes documents suitable for use in another country.
  • To legalise a document, the competent authorities sign and stamp it.
  • Several different steps may be needed to complete the process. Most countries have agreements for this.
